Description
*Couple (Interrogation)* is a 1955 oil painting on canvas by the French artist Maurice Stoppani (1921–2014), signed and dated by the artist. The work depicts a man and a woman in a close, psychologically intense encounter, situating itself within the French figurative tradition of the mid-20th century while displaying a marked Cubist influence.
The two faces dominate the composition, constructed through overlapping planes, angular profiles, and a deliberate simplification of anatomical forms. Muted tones of green, blue, and earth colors contrast with the luminous yellow of the female figure’s hair and the red of the male figure’s garment, creating a chromatic balance that is measured yet highly expressive.
The landscape and the tree in the background complete the scene, contributing to its suspended and introspective atmosphere.
The work bears the signature and date “Stoppani 55”.
Dimensions: width 55 cm, height 45 cm.
